How big is a semi truck?
A semi truck has two parts: the truck in front and the trailer it pulls. A 53-foot trailer is 53 feet long by itself — the truck in front makes the whole vehicle longer.
How long is a semi truck?
The lengths shown here describe the trailer, not the whole vehicle. The trailers drawn from manufacturer brochures here measure 53, 48, and 28 feet. These are real examples, not every size that exists — and the cab up front adds more, so a trailer’s length is not the whole truck’s length. Flatbed source · Pup source
How much does a semi truck weigh?
Weight depends on the truck, trailer, and cargo. 80,000 pounds is the general federal weight limit on Interstate highways, including the load — not an empty truck’s weight. Axle and bridge rules can require a lower weight; permits and other legal exceptions can allow more. Weight-limit source
How wide is a semi truck?
The general federal width standard is 102 inches — 8.5 feet — on the National Network of highways and roads providing reasonable access to it. It excludes certain safety devices; exceptions apply. This is a legal standard, not every trailer’s width. There is no federal height limit; state rules and actual road clearances still apply. Width & height source

Compare trailer lengths (interactive)
These are named trailer-only length examples, not a survey of typical truck sizes. Complete combination length depends on the tractor and coupled arrangement. For conventional truck-tractor/single-semitrailer combinations, FHWA describes no overall length limit on the National Network and reasonable-access routes; specialized vehicle rules differ.

Calculate a total weight
This optional worksheet just adds three weights you supply — tractor, empty trailer, and cargo — and totals them. It assumes nothing and is not a scale reading or a legal check. Count fuel, people, and equipment once. Do not reuse a coupled rig’s tractor-axle reading as the tractor weight and then add the full trailer weight too: the trailer already rests part of its weight on the tractor, so you would count it twice. Why these are separate weights.
For comparison, the general federal Interstate limit is 80,000 lb. Axle and Bridge Formula limits may require less; exceptions, grandfather rights, and permits can allow more. This worksheet draws no legal conclusion. 23 USC 127. Input caps are software limits, not vehicle or legal limits.

These are general federal standards, not equipment measurements or route-clearance advice. Exceptions apply, and being under one limit does not by itself make a load legal.

Each populated specification is a published nominal length for a named manufacturer brochure example, not an independent measurement, current inventory claim or statement about every trailer of that type. Only original manufacturer documents are used for equipment numbers in this dataset. Unknown means not established for that configuration in the reviewed evidence, not proof that no specification exists. Legal standards are separate from equipment specifications and include exceptions. Metric figures are calculated using the cited NIST conversion factors: lengths are displayed to two decimal metres, widths and heights to one decimal centimetre, and worksheet weights to whole units. The width rule's regulatory 2.6-m equivalent is labeled separately. Illustrations compare published lengths only; heights, axle positions and tractor geometry are schematic, not engineering measurements.

Semi-truck dimensions & weight — Texas Truck Accident Lawyer. Three brochure-listed trailer-only nominal lengths. No verified exterior width, height, complete combination length or configuration-specific empty weight is supplied. These are historical published examples, not a current inventory or typical-fleet survey. Trailer length shown is trailer-only — not the full tractor-trailer rig length, which depends on the tractor and coupling. Common questions
- How long is a semi truck?
- There is no single length for every semi truck. The examples here are trailer-only published lengths, not complete combination measurements. The tractor and coupled arrangement determine the full rig's length. FHWA describes no overall length limit for conventional truck-tractor/single-semitrailer combinations on the National Network and reasonable-access routes; specialized vehicle rules differ. [FHWA — Federal Size Regulations for Commercial Motor Vehicles]
- How much does a semi truck weigh?
- Actual weight depends on the equipment and what it carries. The general federal Interstate gross-weight limit is 80,000 pounds, but axle and Bridge Formula limits may require less and statutory exceptions, grandfather rights or qualifying permits can allow more. That legal limit is not an empty or actual truck weight. The worksheet only sums your non-overlapping component weights; it is not a certified scale measurement or a legal-compliance check. [U.S. Code — 23 USC 127: Interstate vehicle weight limitations] [GovInfo — 49 CFR 571.3 vehicle definitions (2025 edition)]
- How wide is a semi truck?
- A particular trailer's published width is a specification, not a universal rule. FHWA gives a federal width standard of 102 inches and a regulatory equivalent of 2.6 metres for the National Network and reasonable-access routes, excluding specified safety devices. Hawaii and special-equipment exceptions apply. The regulatory equivalent is not an exact unit conversion. [FHWA — Federal Size Regulations for Commercial Motor Vehicles]
- How tall is a semi truck?
- There is no one height for all semi trucks and no federal vehicle height requirement. State rules and route clearances still apply. The table reports only dimensions established for its named examples; unknown fields are not estimated. [FHWA — Federal Size Regulations for Commercial Motor Vehicles]
- Is the trailer length the same as the whole truck length?
- No. These are trailer-only lengths. A complete tractor-trailer measurement depends on the tractor and the coupled arrangement. Do not treat the trailer's published length as the full rig's length or calculate combination length by simply adding two uncoupled lengths. [FHWA — Federal Size Regulations for Commercial Motor Vehicles] [GovInfo — 49 CFR 571.3 vehicle definitions (2025 edition)]
